Vertical Balers: Waste Disposal Solutions for Commercial and Industrial Use

SPIE AUTOMATION developed new control technology based on an embedded system for the “V-Press” series.

Challenge and Objective

Managing variants of different control systems was very complex and costly for HSM. In 2006, a new Machinery Directive was also introduced. To remain competitive in the market, the press control system needed to be redeveloped. The old control system had proven itself for many years but was not open to innovations.

With regard to the electrical and electronic components of the press, the following improvements were to be made, while adhering to the budget:

  • Standardized hardware for various press types
  • Minimizing installation effort
  • Use of the control system for additional press types
  • Implementation of the current EC Machinery Directive
  • Simplification of maintenance and service tasks
  • Improved ergonomics and operation

Solution

SPIE AUTOMATION was initially commissioned to conduct a cost analysis. The question was where costs could be saved on the V-Press series. The analysis showed that a redevelopment of the control system and the use of new electrical components (e.g., contactor and power supply) would be appropriate. After HSM commissioned SPIE AUTOMATION with the development, the project phases were defined.

  • Detailed circuit diagram design

  • Construction and commissioning of a functional prototype
  • Development of controller firmware for the V-Press series
  • Development of application software
  • Software implementation
  • Preparation of phase completion documentation

Prototype Phase:

  • Material procurement
  • Assembly production
  • Prototype assembly
  • Software development / optimization / testing
  • Commissioning of assemblies
  • Commissioning of prototypes
  • Commissioning on the actual machine
  • Testing / troubleshooting / optimization
  • Preparation of phase completion documentation

Validation Phase:

  • Hardware and software validation
  • In-house system test
  • Production readiness testing
  • Acceptance tests with the BG ETEM testing body (EMC testing and environmental test)
  • Preparation of phase completion documentation

The implementation of the new Machinery Directive was uncharted territory for all involved at the time. The SPIE AUTOMATION project team delved deeply into the subject matter and was in close coordination with the relevant professional association. The project’s development documentation strictly adhered to standards and was very extensive. It comprised approximately 30 documents with created specifications, e.g., for safety functions, requirements specifications, system requirements, system description, validation plans, circuit diagrams, test reports, and safety calculations.

Benefits

HSM was able to market the HSM V-Press vertical balers in compliance with the new market directives, thereby gaining a competitive advantage. The streamlined control electronics allowed for cost savings. The new and attractive operating concept was particularly service- and maintenance-friendly. The platform was also open and flexible for future expansions.

We reflect on a close collaboration and successful partnership with SPIE AUTOMATION. The control system newly developed at that time served as the basis for a standardized control concept for our HSM V-Press series, upon which we could build. Since then, it has been further developed and has continuously grown with the expansion of our product range.
