Smart sensors
in the industrial environment

The SPIE AUTOMATION Radar System

We combine robust and reliable radar technology with smart sensor software to create an innovative sensor solution. It provides data for the intelligent control of machines and production plants.

Key features

Radar systems are useful data providers in industrial plants. They have low transmission power and operate in the frequency range of 20 – 100 GHz. The range of our radar system covers a few centimeters up to several hundred meters. The system reliably detects large objects such as vehicles, people or animals as well as small objects up to 4cm in size, even in harsh and adverse environments.

How radar works

Radar Stands for RaDio DEtection aNd RAnging

An antenna transmits electromagnetic microwaves in the GHz range. If they hit an object, it reflects and changes the signal. The reflected signal contains information about the object.

A receiving antenna detects the returning signal. It can then be evaluated how large and how far away the object is and how fast it is moving.

Modulation

FMCW
(Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave)

FMCW stands for “Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave” and is a technology that is frequently used in radar and measurement technology. In this method, a continuous signal with a specific frequency is emitted. The signal is gradually modulated to create a changing frequency pattern.

The modulated signal is then emitted and hits an object. This reflects the signal back to the transmitter. The change in the returning frequency is analyzed. This allows you to calculate the distance and speed of the object.

Radarwellen und Transmitter

MIMO
(Multiple Input Multiple Output)

MIMO technology uses multiple antennas on both the transmitter and receiver sides. With multiple antennas, the signal can be divided into multiple “beams” that can then be transmitted and received at different angles.

Multiple data streams can be transmitted simultaneously, resulting in a higher data rate. This improves the transmission capacity of the system. It also improves the signal quality because MIMO technology reduces interference and increases the signal range.
