Asset Management with HoloLens and Insightconnector Application

The HoloLens is intended to recognize QR codes or barcodes of assets. Through these, asset information is queried from the HxGn Cloud Suite via the Insight Mobile Backend and displayed directly in the HoloLens (Augmented Reality).

Challenge and Objective

As the initiator of the project, SPIE SPECTADES, SPIE RODIAS, and SPIE AUTOMATION presented the idea of creating a use case for the trade fair “Husum Wind”. The goal was to simplify the search for information in an Enterprise Asset Management System (EAM). Manual and thus error-prone entry of asset IDs was to be replaced by a scannable QR code.

Furthermore, there should be a direct connection to the EAM system to enable real-time queries and uploads of critical data/information without delay. In addition, asset information should be made more visible. Therefore, a HoloLens was to be used to directly visualize information with Augmented Reality.

Solution

In the first step, a use case description was created to develop a common project understanding. It answered questions such as “What data is read and how?”, “To whom is the data sent?” and “What should be displayed in the HoloLens?”.

After a brief introduction to the HoloLens development tools, SPIE AUTOMATION quickly created a prototype. Progress was regularly reported to SPIE SPECTADES. To save time, a preliminary version of the application was delivered to SPIE SPECTADES for testing on PC there. To test the interfaces and data display, several coordination rounds were conducted with SPIE RODIAS and SPIE SPECTADES. Subsequently, a video about the use case was filmed.

The following asset information is available via the HxGn Cloud Suite used: Asset status information, work orders, checklists, and documents.

Benefits

The HoloLens allows for easy and error-free scanning of a QR code. All relevant asset data is always displayed in the glasses in an up-to-date and visually well-prepared manner. The user now has both hands free to perform work on the asset.

The HoloLens was the first joint software project in which several SPIE partner companies were involved and could contribute their expertise. I found the very collegial interaction great; everyone was motivated, and it was a lot of fun. Another advantage was that we got to know each other better personally, which will make collaboration in future projects even easier.
